How the forecast works

Sunset Score uses weather forecasts and the sun’s position to estimate how colourful each sunrise and sunset could be.

What goes into it?

Cloud height, thickness and position affect whether sunlight reaches the clouds or gets blocked. Visibility, humidity and dust matter too. A cloud-cover percentage alone doesn’t tell you enough.

What does 80 mean?

The score runs from 0 to 100. Higher means conditions look more promising. It’s a quality estimate, not a probability: 80 doesn’t mean an 80% chance of a beautiful sky.

Why did the score change?

Weather forecasts change as new data comes in. Check again closer to sunrise or sunset, especially before travelling to a viewpoint.

Will it look like that from my window?

A city forecast can’t account for a building, hill or tree blocking your view. Nearby clouds can hide the colour too. Use the score to choose when to go, then look for a clear view towards the sun.
